Teekrr
Summary
Took a legacy government SMS platform and repositioned it as Teekrr, a commercial multi-channel communications product spanning SMS, WhatsApp, and email, while managing the sunset of the shortcode the old platform depended on.
Why it mattered
- The legacy platform had a single government channel and a shortcode with a known end date.
- Multi-channel messaging turned a declining utility into a product with a private-sector market.
- Showed that legacy public infrastructure can be repositioned rather than written off.
What I did
- Repositioned the platform from a single-channel government SMS utility into a multi-channel commercial product across SMS, WhatsApp, and email.
- Managed the shortcode sunset and the migration path off it without service disruption.
- Built the commercial proposition from a zero private-sector base, including the target customer segments and pipeline.
Lessons / principles
- Legacy platforms often have more asset value in their delivery infrastructure than in their original use case.
- A forced migration deadline is the best available forcing function for a repositioning.
